In an attempt to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the heavy metals (cadmium, copper, mercury and chromium) in vitro system, fibroblasts isolated from the mouse tail cultured in the media containing different heavy metals of various concentrations, were studied with light microscope and their growth rate were also estimated by counting the cell numbers. Total number of fibroblasis grown in the media added heavy metals were significantly decreased and were proportional to the concentration of the heavy metals. Severity of cytotoxicity estimated by the cell count was most markedly in cadmium chloride, next in mercuric chloride, and followed by cupric sulfate and chromic chloride, respectively. Light microscopy of cultured fibroblasts treated with heavy metals revealed decrement in cell density and somewhat irregular arrangement of growing cells.
From these results, it suggests that heavy metals may disturb cell proliferation and result in eventually cell death.
